Tapeworm treatment for dogs travelling to the UK

To travel to the UK from the EU, all dogs must receive a tapeworm treatment that meets the following requirements:

  • Timing: The treatment must be administered by a veterinarian at least 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before arriving in the UK.
  • Documentation: The veterinarian must record the treatment in the appropriate section of the pet's travel document, either an Animal Health Certificate or an EU Pet Passport. Incomplete or incorrect documentation will result in travel refusal.
  • Medication: The treatment must include Praziquantel, which is effective against Echinococcus tapeworms.

Important Notes:

  • Products like Stronghold, Advocate, Frontline, Frontline Combo, Nexgard, or Nexgard Spectra are not accepted and will result in travel being refused.
  • This list is not exhaustive—ensure the treatment used is compliant with UK regulations.

Additional Information:
If you are travelling to France and returning to the UK within 5 days, the tapeworm treatment can be administered by a veterinarian in the UK before your outbound journey to France.

Failure to comply with these requirements will result in your dog being refused travel until a valid treatment is administered.
